Where Every Child Matters At Cove, every child really matters. This isn’t a slogan, tokenism, or a phrase merely borrowed from a well-known government report. This phrase is at the centre of our working philosophy.
Developing Aspirations At Cove, we acknowledge that a young person’s maladaptive behaviour should be seen in this context. A young person always does their best, in the circumstances they find themselves in, with the resources they have at the time.
Building a Better Future Many young people, faced with exclusion and alienation, have bleak futures mapped out in their minds. Futures which have been drawn over again and again, like tracing over the same drawing repeatedly with a pencil until the lines are thick and indented on the page.

Developing Aspirations

Developing the aspirations of excluded children

Many children within the Looked After system are excluded, whether this be in the literal sense of them being physically removed from school, from home, from their communities, or in the more philosophical sense of them being psychologically excluded and isolated from society. Their thinking and emotions, as well as their reality, can often be described as ‘homeless’. Faced with these overwhelming feelings of isolation they often re-evaluate their aspirations and goals for their lives: how can they defend themselves against this feeling of isolation? How can they develop an identity following years of abuse? How can they cope in the face of impending disaster? In short, how can they survive? As we know, the aspirations they develop to resolve these issues are not always constructive.

Future Plans

At Cove, we see ourselves as a partner to local authorities rather than just a provider. As we continue to build up long-term partnerships in this way, and offer long-term, consistent care and services to our service users, our operational and business strategy is extremely important, and we review this regularly, taking into account the views of the staff team and the young people wherever possible.
